This painting is an intuitive response to global warming, especially in its effects on trees and plants. Diluted oil paint forms a background on which are built up areas of paint. There is a thin line of gold leaf running from top to bottom: a symbol of hope and continuance. I want the viewer to share in the fragile beauty of nature and to care for it.

Artist statement: This painting is an abstract ‘imagined landscape’ and some might say it is Utopian: a Cloud Cuckoo Land. But even on earth there is exchange of energies with the air, the invisible becomes seen: energy becomes matter. Diluted red oil paint represents rays of energy, forming a skeleton on which are built up areas of paint. There is a thin line of gold leaf running into the centre: a symbol of spiritual energy and hope.

Artist statement: This painting is an abstract ‘imagined skyscape’ in the series Cloud Cuckoo Land. In the Ancient Greek comedy of Aristophanes the philosopher Meton puts forward a plan to sell the sky in lots but even the ambitious rulers of Cloud Cuckoo Land recognise this as ridiculous. So in the painting, the yellow grid is his imaginary plan to carve up the sky but the sky has too much dynamism for this idea of being measured out, contained and commodified to work.
